Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) occupies a unique position amongst universities and Institutions of higher learning in the country. It was established in 1920 and evolved out of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) was set up in 1877 by the great visionary and social reformer, Sir Syed Ahmad khan. From its very inception, it has kept its door open to the members of all communities and from all corners of the country and the world. The Aligarh Muslim University s the realization of a vision which was broad, far-reaching, and realistic spite of the establishment of a number of universities and institutions of higher learning all over the country, this University has been maintaining its national and international character as aninstitution of excellence. It has more than 37327, students, 1,686 teachers, and some 5,610 non- teaching staff on its rolls.

The University has opened three new centers of study outside Aligarh at Murshidabad, West Bengal state, Mallapurum, Kerala state, and Kishanganj, Bihar State. Malappuram Centre . Malappuram is the headquarters of the district of the same name in the state of Kerala. It literally means ‘land on top hills’ and is situated 50 km southeast of Kozhikode, bounded by the Nilgiri Hills in the east, the Arabian Sea in the west, and Thrissur and Palakkad districts in the South. The Malappuram district extends from 10 and 12 ON latitudes and 75 o to 77 longitudes. The climate is generally hot and humid with the annual range of temperature varying between 20oC and 30oC.

The Centre for Distance and Online Education (CODE)
The centre for Distance and Online Education (CODE) is an integral part of the University (established under section 5(9A) of
the university Act).Adopting flexible and innovative methods of education to ensure independent learning to anyone , anytime and anywhere ,the Centre offers programs of study that are customised to meet the learning requirements of knowledge seekers as well as to ensure that they learn at their own pace and convenience.
There is a large section of society which is unable to participate in the normal stream of reduction due to occupational , financial or social constraints. All these people can get an opportunity to drive the benefits of education through distance mode .The cost of Distance is preferably low so that educationally backward sections can take advantage of University programs.
